Permeability
Permeability or Hydraulic Conductivity is a material property describing how quickly water can travel through a sample. Permeability is an important property to monitor for any geothermal grouting application since many states have a maximum allowable permeability for thermal grout products in order to protect ground water supplies from contamination.
GeoPro is the only thermal grout manufacturer that independently verifies the permeability of their products. Thermal Grout Lite and Thermal Grout Select are independently verified by Terracon.
Each year we have samples tested with varying thermal conductivities to ensure that the full spectrum of Thermal Grout Lite and Thermal Grout Select mixes will meet or exceed the permeability requirements of the most stringent U.S. states (1x10-7 cm/sec.)
Relating to the Scale
Permeability for our applications is measured in such small units it can be hard to put into a relatable context. To get a sense of how slow
1x10-7 cm/sec truly is, think of it this way...
If you were in a car traveling at 1x10-7 cm/sec it would take almost 10 years (3,528 days) to travel a single foot. Check out the unit conversion below for proof.
| 1x10-7cm | x | 60 sec | x | 60 min | x | 24 hr | = | 0.00864 cm |
| 1 sec | 1 min | 1 hr | 1 day | 1 day |
| 0.00864 cm | x | 1 in | x | 1 ft | = | 0.00028 ft |
| 1 day | 2.54 cm | 12 in | 1 day |
| 1 day | x | 1 ft | = | 3527.8 days |
| 0.00028 ft |
